Description

This artwork is a realistic representation of Iyoba Idia from the historic Kingdom of Benin (now in Modern day Nigeria).

Iyoba Idia known as “Idia ne Iye Esigie” – a renowned warrior queen, skilled administrator, spiritual guide and inspiration. Idia was first an Olori (Royal wife) of Oba Ozolua, as well as a military strategist cum mystical warrior before becoming an Iyoba (Queen Mother) as well as the mother of Oba Esigie (1504 – 1550 CE).

This portrayal of Iyoba Idia highlights the face delicately displayed in its naturalistic elements, with graceful curves that echo the oval shape of the head. The carved scarification marks denote a number related to females, which indicates her gender.

Iron inlays for the pupils and rims of the eyes intensify the Queen Mother’s authoritative gaze and accentuate her inward strength.

The two vertical depressions on her forehead were additionally decorated with iron. She is portrayed wearing a choker of coral beads and her hair is organized in an elegant design that takes after a tiara.

The hollow back, holes around the perimeter, and stopper composed of several tendrils of hair at the summit suggest that the mask functioned as protector, filled with special and powerful materials that preserves the keeper.

This Bronze sculpture will make a great centerpiece for your home, office, studio and more. It will be a great keep for Individuals who would like to connect to the African Heritage.

Sato Drummer

Art & Collectibles
$665.00 $532.00
Sato drummer music links us with our beginning, life, God. Therefore, it is sacred. It is an unmistakably sign of deep spiritual fall when music rendering becomes sensually inclined. Sato drums have the potency of driving away evil spirits, wherever they are beaten. The Sato drum is used and beaten in Akarakunmo during celebratory periods, particularly at burials of very old and renowned individuals. The drums are approximately three metres tall and beaten with seven long drumsticks. Those who play the drums must jump simultaneously at the rhythm of the drum, wear traditional attire and perform acrobatic displays. Those who play drums must be orphans. An orphan who has lost one parent can only use one hand to play the drum and an orphan who has lost both parents can use two hands. If both parents are still alive, you cannot play any of the drums. The drums are hollow and must be covered. The main dancers and drummers of the Sato drums in Nigeria are the children of Kodjo, Avidagba and Tosavi. These are the people who originate from the areas of Agbokomeh, Lokossa and Dadapame (now called Wheaga). Perfect for an outdoor piece.
