Description

Efuru is a novel by Flora Nwapa. The book is about a talented, brilliant, and beautiful Igbo woman named Efuru.

She falls in love with a poor farmer called Adizua and flees with him, disappointing her people as he did not even perform the traditional wine carrying and pay her bride price.

She lives in a small community in colonial West Africa that is confined by tradition.

A woman’s essential role was childbearing and if she does not fulfil that role she gets negative criticism from members of the society.

Throughout the story, she desires to be a mother, though she is well to do.

The book is an absolute portrayal of the Igbo culture.

An intense parody of sorts on government, marriage, and psychology. Tawfiq al-Hakim is one of Egypts most famous playwright, and also one of its most important essayists and novelists.
