Description

Fiona MacDougall is conceited, lazy, ignorant, and completely lacking in common sense. Her mind is filled with science fiction and Walter Mitty fantasies, and her grasp on real life is not strong. She applies for a job in her company’s infotech department because she will get an afternoon off work to sit aptitude tests.

Everyone except Fiona is surprised when she is awarded one of the coveted positions. Trouble rears its head when her current boss refuses to approve her transfer, but Fiona has resources at her command – a fortuitous piece of salacious gossip provides the means to exert blackmail power on him, and she moves to the I.T. department, where she is, as usual, quite out of her depth.

Things take a turn for the worse when the new manager, Godfrey Goebbels, arrives; he is a bully, and Fiona in particular draws his ire, due to her bad attitude and lack of work performance. When his new secretary arrives and turns out to be Aboriginal, Goebbels is revealed to be a hardcore racist as well, and life in the office reaches a new low.

There is no relief at home either, as Patrick, Fiona’s teenaged brother, gets himself into ever more impossible scrapes, and her tomcat, Moses, engages in ever more egregious misbehaviour. Soon, Patrick is pretending to have a vocation for the priesthood in order to escape the consequences of his misdeeds; this results in a great deal of interaction with Father Morelli, a priest whom Patrick hates intensely. Patrick sees himself as the injured party when Morelli catches him in some misdeeds and becomes obsessed with the idea of obtaining revenge. To this end, he persuades Fiona to burgle the Dominican convent to plant a pornographic magazine in Morelli’s room.

Fiona escapes from this predicament in her usual way, by lying, and is then fired from the job for hitting the Emergency Stop on the computer during some horseplay in the computer room. As we say goodbye to her, she is contemplating joining the Police.

Americanah

Books & Magazines
$6.00 $4.80
From the award winning creator of We Should All Be Feminists - the story is about the narrative of two Nigerians advancing in the U.S. also, the UK, bringing up widespread issues of race, having a place, the abroad experience for the African diaspora, and the quest for identity and a home. Ifemelu and Obinze are youthful and in love when they left military-administered Nigeria for the West. Delightful, confident Ifemelu sets out toward America, where regardless of her scholarly achievement, she is compelled to wrestle with being dark for the first time. Calm, smart Obinze had would have liked to join her, however with post-9/11 America closed to him, he rather dives into a risky, undocumented life in London. After fifteen years, they rejoin in a recently democratic Nigeria, and reignite their passion for one another and for their country.

We Should All Be Feminists

Books & Magazines
$5.00 $4.00
The book - We Should All Be Feminists can be read as a preliminary to get women's liberation. While the writer shares her experiences of confronting gender-based discrimination and those of her loved ones in Nigeria, the issues introduced in the book are as yet general in the sense, individuals across the world can identify with them. The two aspects of the books that I have basically centered on in this review are: the stereotypical idea of feminism and the word feminist; and the process of normalization. Different issues talked about by the creator are: invisibilization, pay gap, raising young ladies and young men in an unexpected way, culture and gender.

Sounds Of Joy (An Autobiography)

Books & Magazines
$10.00 $8.00
SOUNDS OF JOY, the autobiography of Segun Akinlolu (Beautiful Nubia). A story of honest dreams come true; win over a restricting, inadequately organized climate; and triumph over negativism. A book that could rouse those in need of motion, encourage those seeking traction and breathe new life into those trapped in "dull spots". Spanning the first 34 years of the Artist's life, in more than 340 pages, it features the roots and conceivable outcomes of the Redeemable Mess called Nigeria and, with humor and happiness, pushes the reader towards individual and communal renewal.
